Kiwis are reaching for organic, fair trade and
ethically produced products now more than
ever. Shoppers are focussed on purchasing
products that not only look after the environment,
animal welfare and biodiversity, but products that
support farmers and local communities.
These purchasing trends have emerged as
consumer scepticism surrounding product integrity
and authenticity increases. Consumers want to
know where their food and products have come
from and that they are safe to use.
Fair trade is a trend that has
quietly been gathering steam
over the last few years,

Interestingly the concept of fair trade
production has been around for much longer
than often perceived.
Organic production for one has always considered
the welfare of the people behind the products, even
before fair trade initiatives were launched.
Since its founding in 1983, BioGro has
been focussed on certifying farming and
manufacturing practices that we believe are

Organic farming is a holistic style of production.
This means, whether you are producing fresh fruit

unite and empower local producers, farmers, their

in developing countries.

financially support local New Zealand producers,
as well as their growers in developing countries.
Simply put, organic is fair trade and more.
So how does this work?
Organic production allows members of the food
and product supply chain to better connect with
their customers. When we buy an organic product,
we know that the product has been produced by a
trusted source and can be traced back to its origin.
Buying organic is about knowing and connecting
with your farmer. It is about supporting
them and their employees, and
encouraging them to continue
and fair trade principles.
We can show our

In New Zealand, organic
operations also tend to have higher
numbers of employees. It is the system of organic
farming itself which demands more labour. The
creation of more jobs increases empowerment

auditing in New Zealand on behalf of Fair Trade
Australia and New Zealand as an independent
To date, nearly 50 producers across New
Zealand are certified fair trade and will be audited
by BioGro. Around 20% of these producers also
manage operations that are BioGro certified.
These producers recognise the intricate link
between fair trade and organic principles. The
philosophies of both groups are aligned, not separate.
