And apparently, we are all getting older too... did you know that the proportion
of the world’s population aged 60 years and older will rise to 22% in 2050 (up
from 11% in 2000)? Aging consumers seek functionality and health-boosting
benefits from their food and global trends show a surge in products containing
anti-oxidants, collagen, and lutein (for eye health). This growing demographic
means we will see more NPD with potential ‘anti-aging’ benefits in the next few years.
Healthy snacks are on the rise and popular with shoppers of all ages. We take a closer look
at this category in New Zealand supermarkets on pg 26-29.

The food and beverage sector now employs one in five New Zealand workers and accounts
for over half of our merchandise export earnings.
As I write this note, Southland crops are weeks behind schedule following a cold winter and
spring, which is causing concern for farmers and growers. Supplying fresh produce just in time for
Christmas could be challenging in some areas. The next few weeks will be very busy for stores and
their suppliers as demand for festive fare and holiday supplies reaches its peak, but we hope you
will get a chance to have some well-deserved time out too, to relax and recharge your batteries.
Most of us like to celebrate the festive season with a glass of bubbles, cider, or a cold beer and
we have all of that covered in our New Zealand Liquor News section. Turn to pages 49-67 to
find the latest product releases, tasting notes and top tips from industry experts Yvonne Lorkin,
