LEADING INDUSTRY NEWS
PLUS! SALADS & DRESSSINGS n NEW TRENDS n AMBER ALES n
hope you had a great start to 2016. Christmas and New Year’s sales certainly brought
good tidings for retailers, with New Zealanders spending an extra $397 million over
December compared with the previous year, according to Paymark.
So what will 2016 have in store for us? Will e-commerce and m-commerce continue
their stellar rise? Are new store and supply chain technologies going to offer even more
advanced sustainability and better energy savings? What exciting new products will
our industry dream up next?
We consulted a wide range of experts and have curated some key trends for the new year
and beyond in this issue. Plant-centred cooking is an interesting one to watch. It’s good for
the planet and our health and is becoming increasingly popular with consumers who opt for
a ‘flexitarian’ lifestyle (think meat alternatives and occasional meat-free meals).
Did you know that 85% of people surveyed by Research International want to buy ‘New
Zealand made’ food and that 90% of those recognise the ‘NZ Made’ logo? Our cover story,
which starts on page 32, reveals that consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the
value country of origin can have on a product and they’re checking labels like never before.
In our New Zealand Liquor News section this month, award-winning beer writer
Neil Miller contemplates Amber Ales, international wine judge Cameron Douglas shares
his wine tasting notes, and industry maven Yvonne Lorkin explores Marisco Vineyards
Lanson is the official Champagne partner of Wimbledon and also the oldest French
Champagne house to hold the Royal Warrant. I had the pleasure of meeting Lanson Cellar
Master, Hervé Dantan in Auckland recently and you will find his news about Lanson’s
launches in New Zealand on pages 62-63.
Here’s to a successful, prosperous and exciting year!
Bring on the new year!
